The Seven Sparrows Story

My journey with herbs and their healing properties began years ago, when my children were young. I organized a “Weed Walk Party” for my mom-friends and our kiddos. My herbalist friend guided us on a walk around the property, stopping periodically to identify edible and medicinal plants. She introduced us to lambsquarters, dandelion, and yarrow. But perhaps the most life-changing thing she taught me was how to identify and use motherwort. She showed me a ‘weed’ that was growing prolifically on my property and then how to tincture it and turn it into medicine. And it worked! For many years, homemade motherwort tincture was the only tincture I used. I alternated it with crampbark after birth for pain management, and continued to reach for it once or twice a month for menstrual cramps.

Fast forward several years, and I found myself bruised and broken from the various traumas that we inevitably experience in life; who was I really and what was my purpose? When I was finally able to emerge from that dark place, I found healing for both body and soul in wildcrafting herbs. I spent hours wandering the property, spring, summer, and fall with my basket, my scissors, and my plant ID app. I took time getting to know how different plants grew and how they lent themselves to healing. I’d love to introduce you to some of my favorites:

Motherwort is like that friend that shows up with fresh fruit and chocolate and cleans your whole house when you’re having a rough day.

Chamomile is like that kind, soft-spoken friend you have that seems fragile, but actually has great inner strength.

Lemon Balm is like that friend who never seems too fazed by life - who always has a ready smile and something positive to say.

Red Raspberry Leaf is like that friend who has always been emotionally intelligent - the one who helps you work through your thoughts and emotions without being pushy or judgy.

Holy Basil is like that friend who helps you see the best version of yourself.

Yarrow is like that friend who doesn’t waste time on small talk; if there’s a problem, they’re the first to come up with a solution.

Peppermint is like that friend who’s up for anything; life is short, so let’s get going!

St. John’s Wort is like that friend who sees the whole picture - who realizes that one unbalanced area of your life can manifest itself in a completely different area.

Red Clover Blossom is like that friend who insists that you slow down and be present in the moment.

Blue Vervain is like that friend who offers a fresh perspective on a problem that has been plaguing you.

Wild Lettuce is like that friend that sends you to the spa for the day - because you deserve to unwind and relax!

These plant allies (friends) have been here all along. Knowledge about their healing properties was gradually lost along the way in the name of modernization; however, they are quick to forgive and reconnect. I hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as I have!

“The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” (Lamentations 3:22-23, NLT)
